9. April 2021. The Wind, das mit Spannung erwartete neue Album des erfolgreichen Minimalistenduos Balmorhea, erscheint heute bei Deutsche Grammophon; HIER anhören/teilen. Zwölf Tracks sind darauf, inspiriert von Meditationen über die Natur und ihre Zerbrechlichkeit – beispielsweise von dem Erzählstoff über einen Heiligen, der den Wind in ein französisches Tal trug oder den Gedanken der schwedischen Klimaaktivistin Greta Thunberg, die den Atlantik auf einem Katamaran überquerte.

»Ich kam mit diesem kleinen Klavierstück ins Studio und hatte den Eindruck, dass es nur halb fertig war. Im Grunde hatte ich gar nicht vor, es aufzunehmen. Jetzt aber ist es einer meiner Lieblingsmomente auf dem Album«, sagt Rob Lowe, Komponist und Multiinstrumentalist des Duos, zu dem auch Michael A. Muller gehört, über den herausragenden Track »Nos«. »Wir betten uns in Klaviermusik. Eine leise Celesta und eine nachhallende Parlor-Gitarre funkeln und schimmern an den Rändern«, sagt Muller. Die heutige Veröffentlichung folgt auf die Singles aus dem Album – »La Vagabonde«, »The Myth« und »Rose in Abstract«.

The Wind wurde im Saal 3 vom Funkhaus Berlin aufgenommen, wo auch Lowes und Mullers Freund Nils Frahm – seines Standes Multiinstrumentalist, Komponist und Produzent – zu Hause ist. Der Grammy-prämierte Tontechniker und Produzent Jonathan Low, bekannt für seine jüngsten Projekte mit Taylor Swift, Caroline Shaw und Sō Percussion, hat die Aufnahme koproduziert und in seinem Studio Long Pond, das er in Upstate New York für Aaron Dessner und The National betreibt, gemischt und gemastert.

Balmorhea, ausgesprochen bal-mə-RAY und benannt nach einer kleinen Stadt im Westen von Texas, wurde 2006 gegründet, nachdem sich Lowe und Muller in einem Sommercamp im abgelegenen Texas Hill Country begegnet waren und gemeinsam Musik gemacht hatten. Schon bald spielten die beiden mit einem Ensemble und tourten durch die Vereinigten Staaten und Europa. Fünf Jahre vergingen so. Erst als Mitglieder ihres Ensembles aus Texas wegzogen, nutzten Lowe und Muller eine Tourneepause, um wieder gemeinsam zu improvisieren und zu experimentieren. Mit der Veröffentlichung von The Wind reihen sie sich als erste Texaner in den Künstlerkreis von Deutsche Grammophon ein.

April 9, 2021. The Wind, the highly anticipated new album from lauded minimalist duo Balmorhea, is out today on Deutsche Grammophon; listen/share HERE. The record comprises a dozen tracks inspired variously by meditations on the natural world and its fragility, an ancient tale about a saint who carried the wind to an airless French valley, and thoughts of climate activist Greta Thunberg crossing the Atlantic.

“I brought this little piano piece into the studio feeling like it was only about halfway complete and didn’t really intend to record it or include it on the album. In the end I think it has become one of my favorite moments on the album,” says composer and multi-instrumentalist Rob Lowe – one half of the duo that also includes Michael A. Muller – about the standout track “Nos”. “Here we lay down again on a soft bed of piano. A quiet celeste and a reverberating parlor guitar sparkle and shimmer around the edges,” adds Muller. Today’s release follows that of three singles from the album: “La Vagabonde”, “The Myth” and “Rose in Abstract”.

The Wind was recorded in the iconic Saal 3 of Berlin’s Funkhaus, musical home to Lowe and Muller’s multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer friend Nils Frahm, co-produced by Grammy-winning engineer and producer Jonathan Low (Taylor Swift, Caroline Shaw, Sō Percussion), and mixed and mastered by Low at Long Pond in upstate New York, the studio that he operates for Aaron Dessner and The National.

Balmorhea, pronounced “Bal-more-ray” and named for a small town in western Texas, began life in 2006 when Lowe and Muller met and made music at a summer camp in the remote Texas Hill Country. The group gradually evolved into a larger ensemble and toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Following an intense five-year period on the road, Balmorhea’s two founders took advantage of a break from touring to improvise and experiment together once more. With the release of The Wind, they are the first-ever Texans to join ranks with a wide cast of new fellow artists, from Brian Eno to Beethoven, on the historic Yellow Label.
