Das Debüt von Joe Hisaishi bei Deutsche Grammophon hat die deutschen Popcharts gestürmt. Die Ende September erschienene Doppel-LP von A Symphonic Celebration erreichte in Deutschland Platz 6 der Hitliste. Erstmals überhaupt findet sich Hisaishi in den Popcharts dieses Landes. Im Vereinigten Königreich erreichte die Schallplatte Platz 4 der Klassikcharts und Platz 1 des Specialist Album Charts, während sie in den USA an die Spitze der Billboard-Klassikcharts gelangte und auf Platz 74 der Billboard 200 einstieg. Einmal mehr zeigt sich die Beliebtheit seiner Studio-Ghibli-Soundtracks. A Symphonic Celebration wurde im Juni digital und auf CD veröffentlicht. Innerhalb weniger Wochen führte es auch in diesen Formaten die Klassikcharts vieler Länder an, darunter die USA, Japan und Frankreich.

Der Erfolg ist nicht zuletzt Hisaishis beeindruckender Präsenz in den sozialen Medien zuzurechnen. Ein Instagram-Post von Hisaishi wurde im September rekordverdächtige sechs Millionen Mal aufgerufen. Sein YouTube-Kanal hat mehr als eine Million Abonnenten. Weltweit verzeichnet seine Musik bislang sensationelle 5,3 Milliarden Streams.

Und auch die Presse ist begeistert. »Diese schon für sich herausragende Musik beschwört Wunder, Schönheit, Pracht und Magie, ohne dass es der Worte bedarf«, urteilt der SWR 2. »Beeindruckend und unterhaltsam zugleich«, pflichtet Vinyl-Fan bei und vergibt fünf Sterne.

»Mit dem DG-Team an diesem Album zu arbeiten war eine inspirierende Erfahrung«, sagt Joe Hisaishi. »Ich bin sehr glücklich über diesen Erfolg und danke meinen Fans auf der ganzen Welt für ihre Zuneigung und Unterstützung. Erst im September gab Joe Hisaishi sein Pultdebüt in Großbritannien in der Londoner Wembley Arena. Im kommenden Jahr ist er erstmals in Deutschland als Dirigent zu erleben. Er leitet die Münchner Symphoniker und den Motettenchor in Musik aus A Symphonic Celebration im PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf am 23. Mai und in der Olympiahalle in München am 25. Mai.

Unterdessen erscheint pünktlich zu Weihnachten ein Sammlerstück: Symphonic Pieces – Collector’s Edition ist eine streng limitierte 12″-Schallplatte aus weiß marmoriertem Vinyl. Sie kommt am 1. Dezember heraus und stellt zwei Stücke vor, die hier erstmals auf Vinyl veröffentlicht werden: »Merry-Go-Round of Life« aus Howl’s Moving Castle (Das wandelnde Schloss) und die englische Fassung von »One Summer’s Day (The Name of Life)« aus Spirited Away (Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland).

A Symphonic Celebration präsentiert Hisaishis eigene symphonische Arrangements seiner beliebten Soundtracks für Studio Ghibli, darunter »The Legend of Ashitaka« aus Princess Mononoke (Prinzessin Mononoke), »Nausicaä Requiem« aus Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Nausicaä aus dem Tal der Winde) und die Chor- und Orchesterklänge von »Carrying You« aus Castle in the Sky (Das Schloss im Himmel). Hisaishi hat sie in London mit dem Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, dem Bach Chor und den  Tiffin Choirs sowie Grace Davidson eingespielt.

Hisaishi ist einer der ganz Großen unter den japanischen Komponisten. Nicht zuletzt durch seine Arbeit mit dem oscargekrönten Regisseur und Studio-Ghibli-Gründer Hayao Miyazaki ist er weltbekannt. Ihre kreative Partnerschaft begann 1984 mit dem Animefilm Nausicaä aus dem Tal der Winde und entwickelte sich rasch. Heute wird sie in einem Atemzug genannt mit legendären Duos wie Hitchcock und Herrmann, Fellini und Rota, Leone und Morricone oder Spielberg und Williams. Mit nicht weniger als acht japanischen Oscars wurden Hisaishis Soundtracks ausgezeichnet. Ebenso geehrt wird er als Dirigent und Komponist zeitgenössischer klassischer Musik. Meist minimalistisch und experimentell erinnern seine Klangschöpfungen an die Werke seiner Freunde und Kollegen, etwa Philip Glass, Terry Riley oder Nico Muhly.

 

 

Joe Hisaishi’s Deutsche Grammophon debut album has stormed the German pop charts. The double‑disc vinyl edition of the revered Japanese composer’s A Symphonic Celebration, released on 29 September 2023, has climbed to No.6 in Germany, marking Hisaishi’s first ever appearance in the country’s pop charts. In the UK it reached No.4 in the classical album chart and No.1 in the specialist album chart, while in the US it topped Billboard’s classical album chart and got to No.74 on the Billboard 200. This success underlines the enormous affection in which his Studio Ghibli soundtrack scores are held and follows that of A Symphonic Celebration’s initial release in physical and digital formats in June, when it topped the classical charts across multiple territories, including the US, Japan and France.

Social media has played a significant role in connecting listeners with the album, with one of Hisaishi’s Instagram posts attracting a record six million views in September and his YouTube channel recently topping one million subscribers. To date, his music has garnered a sensational 5.3 billion global streams.

A Symphonic Celebration has also been hailed by mainstream media. “This music, outstanding in its own right, evokes wonder, beauty, splendour and magic without the need for words,” observed Germany’s SWR2, while in its five-star review Vinyl-Fan.de called the album “impressive and entertaining at the same time”.

“Working on this album with the team at DG has been an inspiring experience,” comments Joe Hisaishi. “I am happy about its success and grateful to my fans all over the world for their love and support. And I am looking forward to my first concerts in Germany as well as more recordings to come in 2024.”

Joe Hisaishi made his long-awaited UK conducting debut at the end of September at London’s Wembley Arena. He is now set to make his podium debut in Germany with two performances next year, directing the Münchner Symphoniker and Motettenchor in music from A Symphonic Celebration at the PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf (23 May) and the Olympiahalle in Munich (25 May).

Meanwhile, a strictly limited edition 12″ white marbled vinyl disc entitled Symphonic Pieces – Collector’s Edition will appear in time for Christmas. Out on 1 December, it presents two tracks previously unissued on vinyl: “Merry-Go-Round of Life” from Howl’s Moving Castle and the English-language version of “One Summer’s Day (The Name of Life)” from Spirited Away.

A Symphonic Celebration boasts Hisaishi’s own symphonic arrangements of music from his beloved soundtracks for Studio Ghibli, including “The Legend of Ashitaka” from Princess Mononoke, “Nausicaä Requiem” from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and the majestic choral and orchestral sounds of “Carrying You” from Castle in the Sky. The album features the composer conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Grace Davidson, the Bach Choir and the Tiffin Choirs.

Joe Hisaishi ranks among Japan’s greatest composers of all time and is famed worldwide for his collaborative work with Oscar-winning director and Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki. Their creative partnership began in 1984 with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and has since developed to the point that they are now likened to other legendary director-composer pairings, including Hitchcock and Herrmann, Fellini and Rota, Leone and Morricone, and Spielberg and Williams. Hisaishi’s reputation has been secured by the fact that his soundtracks have won eight Japanese Academy Awards, an unprecedented achievement. He is equally acknowledged as a conductor and as a composer of contemporary classical music, much of it minimalistic and experimental in nature, like that of friends and colleagues such as Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Nico Muhly.
