Berlin, 5. April 2024 – Am 30. März 2023 gab Joe Hisaishi sein triumphales Debüt auf dem Podium des ausverkauften Wiener Musikvereins mit einem Programm seiner eigenen Werke (als Stream auf STAGE+ zu erleben). Nun veröffentlicht Deutsche Grammophon Joe Hisaishi in Vienna, das zweite Album des weltbekannten und mehrfach ausgezeichneten japanischen Komponisten, Dirigenten und Pianisten für das Gelblabel. Die Aufnahme folgt auf seinen äußerst erfolgreichen DG-Erstling A Symphonic Celebration – Music from the Studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki, im letzten Jahr eines der meistverkauften Klassikalben der Welt.

Joe Hisaishi in Vienna stellt die Weltersteinspielung der Zweiten Symphonie des Komponisten vor, einen Livemitschnitt aus dem Musikverein mit den Wiener Symphonikern. Hisaishi kehrte schon bald in das legendäre Konzerthaus zurück für eine weitere Weltersteinspielung, die Aufnahme seiner Viola Saga mit dem renommierten Solisten Antoine Tamestit. Das Album erscheint am 28. Juni 2024 auf CD, als Doppel-LP und digital. Die erste Single Viola Saga Movement 2 wird am 5. April veröffentlicht.

Joe Hisaishi ist weltweit für seine Filmmusik berühmt, insbesondere für seine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Studio-Ghibli-Schöpfer und zweifachen Oscarpreisträger Hayao Miyazaki. Gemeinsam realisierten sie Filme wie Spirited Away (Chihiros Reise ins Zauberland), Princess Mononoke (Prinzessin Mononoke) und My Neighbor Totoro (Mein Nachbar Totoro). 2023 wurde Hisaishi für die Filmmusik ihrer letzten Produktion, The Boy and the Heron (Der Junge und der Reiher), für einen Golden Globe nominiert. Für sein DG-Debüt schrieb er hochgelobte symphonische Arrangements von mehreren dieser Soundtracks und stürmte damit weltweit die Charts. Seine Popularität ist derart groß, dass er in diesem Sommer als erster klassischer Komponist überhaupt an drei aufeinanderfolgenden Abenden im Madison Square Garden auftreten wird.

Doch nicht nur für seine Filmmusik, auch für seinen imposanten Katalog zeitgenössischer klassischer Kompositionen genießt Joe Hisaishi großes Renommee. Diese Klangschöpfungen sind oft minimalistisch und inspiriert von den experimentellen Werken seiner Freunde und Kollegen, etwa Philip Glass, Steve Reich und Terry Riley. Ebenso entfalten sich darin das reiche musikalische Erbe Japans sowie die klassischen Traditionen des Westens. Das neue DG-Album widmet sich dieser Musik. Originalität, Vielseitigkeit, feinstes musikalisches Handwerk und hohe Sensibilität kommen zum Ausdruck. Hisaishi ist als ein Komponist mondialer klassischer Musik fürs Konzerthaus zu erleben. Und er steht selbst am Pult in ihrer Interpretation.

Die minimalistische Symphonie Nr. 2, 2021 in Kyoto uraufgeführt, nutzt subtile Repetition, doch starke Kontraste in Rhythmus und Orchestertextur variieren die drei Sätze des Werks. »Gustav Mahler ist mein Lieblingskomponist«, sagt Hisaishi. »Aber unsere Stile unterscheiden sich in allem. Mahler führt immer neue Themen ein, während ich als Minimalist ein Motiv nehme und daran arbeite, es nach und nach entwickle und alles daran setze, dass es 20 Minuten lang trägt.« Die Wiener Symphoniker tauchten ein in diesen Gedanken. So sehr begeisterte Hisaishi ihr Spiel, dass er sich entschied, den Livemitschnitt des Konzerts aus dem Wiener Musikverein für sein Album zu nehmen.

Nur wenige Monate später kehrte er in die österreichische Hauptstadt zurück. Nun wurde sein Bratschenkonzert, 2022 komponiert, mit demselben Orchester und dem Solisten Antoine Tamestit aufgenommen. Viola Saga ist ein Werk der wechselnden Stimmungen und es ist anspruchsvoll, wie geschaffen für den herausragenden französischen Bratschisten, den Hisaishi für seinen farbenreichen Ton und sein außergewöhnliches technisches Können schätzt. Hisaishi und Tamestit haben das Konzert seitdem in Macao und Osaka mit großem Erfolg auf die Bühne gebracht.

Ebenfalls heute (Freitag, 5. April 2024) bekannt gegeben: Joe Hisaishi wird vom Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) mit Wirkung vom 6. April 2024 zum “Composer-in-Association” ernannt. Diese neue Rolle entspringt der erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit am “A Symphonic Celebration” Album, das bei der Deutschen Grammophon im letzten Jahr erschienen ist, und woraufhin das Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Joe Hisaishi einlud, sein Composer-in-Association zu werden. Die auf drei Jahre angelegte Zusammenarbeit umfasst neue Auftragswerke für das RPO, Konzerte in London und auf der ganzen Welt, Studioaufnahmen sowie die Beteiligung von Maestro Hisaishi an neuen digitalen und technologiebasierten RPO-Projekten.

Berlin, 5 April 2024 – On 30 March last year, Joe Hisaishi made his triumphant debut on the podium of a sold-out Vienna Musikverein, conducting a programme of his own works (available to stream on STAGE+ here). Deutsche Grammophon is now thrilled to announce the release of Joe Hisaishi in Vienna – the world-renowned and multi-award-winning Japanese composer, conductor and pianist’s second album for the Yellow Label. The new recording follows on from his immensely successful DG debut, A Symphonic Celebration – Music from the Studio Ghibli films of Hayao Miyazaki, one of the best-selling classical albums worldwide in 2023.

Joe Hisaishi in Vienna presents the world premiere recording  of the composer’s Symphony No. 2, captured live at the Musikverein with the Wiener Symphoniker. After this elevating experience Hisaishi came back to record another world premiere in Vienna: his Viola Saga, featuring renowned soloist Antoine Tamestit. Set for album release on Friday 28 June 2024 on CD, vinyl (2 LPs) and digital, the first single Viola Saga Movement 2 is released on Friday 5 April.

Joe Hisaishi is known across the globe for his film music, in particular his collaborations with Studio Ghibli creator and two-time Oscar-winner Hayao Miyazaki on such movies as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro. In 2023, Hisaishi’s score for their latest feature, The Boy and the Heron, earned him his very first Golden Globe nomination. For his DG debut album he created symphonic arrangements of music from several of these soundtracks, achieving global chart success and widespread critical acclaim. His popularity is so great that he is due to headline three consecutive nights at Madison Square Garden this summer – the first classical composer ever to do so.

Over the decades, Joe Hisaishi has also earned great respect for his work away from the film world, having built up a wide-ranging catalogue of contemporary classical works. Many of these are inspired by minimalism and the experimental compositions of friends and colleagues such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Terry Riley, as well as by the rich musical heritage of Japan and Western classical traditions. This second DG album focuses on Hisaishi the concert-hall composer – highlighting the originality and versatility of his musical craftsmanship – as well as on his long-honed skill and sensitivity as a conductor.

Premiered in Kyoto in 2021, the minimalist Symphony No. 2 uses subtle repetition to dramatic effect, employing stark contrasts in rhythm and orchestral texture to create variation across its three movements. “Gustav Mahler is my favourite composer,” notes Hisaishi. “But our styles are entirely different. Mahler keeps introducing new themes, while we minimalists take one motif and work on it, changing it little by little, trying our best to make it last 20 minutes.” The composer-conductor was so pleased with the Wiener Symphoniker’s performance at the Musikverein that he chose to include the live version on this album.

A few months after the Vienna concert, Hisaishi returned to the Austrian capital to make the world premiere recording of his 2022 viola concerto with the same orchestra and soloist Antoine Tamestit. The composer greatly admires the French violist’s warm sound and unsurpassed technique, perfect for Viola Saga’s changing moods and demanding writing. Hisaishi and Tamestit have since gone on to give acclaimed live performances of the work in Macao and Osaka.

Also announced today (Friday 5 April 2024): Joe Hisaishi has been appointed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) as its Composer-in- Association, with effect from 6 April 2024. The appointment follows a successful collaboration on the ‘Symphonic Celebration’ album released on the Deutsche Grammophon label, after which the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra invited Joe Hisaishi to become its Composer-in-Association. The three-year appointment will include new commissions for the RPO, concerts in London and around the world, studio recordings as well as Maestro Hisaishi’s involvement in new digital and technology based RPO projects.’
